Spring Thaw in Wisconsin: 5 Places Water Damage Hides Before You Notice It

March 12, 2026

When the snow melts and spring rain starts rolling through Central Wisconsin, most people look for obvious leaks. But water damage usually starts in the places you do not check every day.

Here are five spots to pay attention to right now:

1. Basement corners
A little moisture in the basement can turn into a much bigger problem fast. Check for damp walls, musty odors, dark spots, or boxes that feel soft underneath.

2. Around windows
Spring rain can sneak in through worn seals and leave damage around trim, drywall, and sills. If paint is bubbling or the area feels soft, do not ignore it.

3. Under sinks and behind toilets
Small plumbing leaks often go unnoticed until staining, odor, or mold shows up. Open the cabinet, look for swelling, and check for any musty smell.

4. Entryways and carpet edges
Mud, melting snow, and rainwater get tracked in every day this time of year. That extra moisture can settle into carpet and padding, especially near doors.

5. Attics and ceiling lines
Spring storms can expose roof issues fast. Water stains, sagging drywall, or a sudden discoloration on the ceiling are all signs it is time to act.
