Carpet Cleaning Tips for a Long-Lasting Carpet

May 10, 2022

Does your carpet in your office need cleaning? Cleaning carpets requires tools and products to thoroughly clean and remove stains and other debris. In addition, some stains may require more effective techniques and products.

By neglecting stains or dirt for too long, you risk further damaging your carpet. The good thing is that you can maintain your carpet if you follow some carpet cleaning tips.

Carpet Cleaning Tips for Spills and Stains

1. Don't Rub the Stains Caused by Spilled Liquids

After you have spilled food or liquids, do not rub the stains. Rubbing will push the stains further into the carpet fibers and be harder to remove. Instead, dab them gently with any cleaning solution or carpet cleaners with a sponge, paper towel, or a clean cloth.

By dabbing, you are absorbing the stain and not damaging the fibers. However, when you rub it, you break down the carpet fibers and ruin the longevity of a good carpet.

2. Removing General Stains

Shaving cream can be used to remove general stains. Leave the shaving cream on the stain to absorb the product for about 30 minutes. The shaving cream should be set by that time, at which point you may blot it with a dry cloth.

Lastly, spray the area with a 50/50 combination of water and white vinegar, then wipe it away with a cloth.

3. Removing Wine Stains, Beer, and Other Spills

If used correctly, club soda is excellent for removing wine stains, beer, and other spills. To begin, pour club soda on a clean cloth. Then, use a dabbing motion to clean the area.

Once you notice the stain becoming lighter, that means the club soda is working. Keep in mind that some stains are more challenging to remove than others. If that is the case, use a one-to-one ratio of water and white vinegar.

Pour the solution into a spray bottle, spray the stained area enough to make the carpet slightly damp, and then let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Press a dry sponge onto the area to absorb the solution and the stain.

After you remove it, rinse the area with warm water. Next, brush the carpet using your hands to follow its natural direction. Lastly, place several sheets of paper towels on the spot and place heavy items on top to soak up the wet area.

4. Removing Blood Stains

If you cut your finger or other parts of your body and it drops onto the carpet, you can remove the stain with hydrogen peroxide. Pour enough product on the spot until it covers the entire stained area. After a few minutes, blot the hydrogen peroxide and blood with paper towels.

5. Getting Rid Of Stubborn Stains from Greasy Food

Spilled greasy food or liquid is the most difficult to clean. However, dish soap will help cut the grease. First, pour some dish soap into a cup of warm water, then mix the solution and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray and soak the stain. Lastly, blot the spot with paper towels or a clean cloth.

6. Lifting Hardened Chewing Gum

It may be difficult to remove gum from the carpet, but ice can help. Grab some ice cubes and press them on top of the gum for about 45 seconds. The gum should be frozen, allowing you to use a spoon to lift it.

Next, cut the carpet strands close to the gum using scissors or a knife. The spot should be small enough to be undetectable.

7. Removing Stuck and Hardened Wax

The wax from candles can drip onto carpets and get stuck. The best way to remove it is by using a heat source to soften it.

First, place a cloth over the hardened wax. Next, heat a clothing iron and set it on top of the cloth over the wax. Once the wax has softened, you can use a butter knife or a comb to remove it gently.

Carpet Cleaning Tips for Dirt

Vacuuming the carpet is the best way to remove dirt. Dirt dulls the carpet and scratches the fibers. A clean carpet requires regular vacuuming, so invest in a quality vacuum cleaner.

1. Vacuum often

Vacuuming often will help maintain a clean carpet by removing oily soils, dust, and other debris that can build up daily.

2. Use walk-off mats

A walk-off mat will keep dirt off your carpets by removing debris underneath the shoes. It would be best if you had mats inside and outside your premises.

3. Have a clean bag or filter in your vacuum

Having a full vacuum bag will lessen its power suction strength by half. Buy and replace the filters and loads of your vacuums every three months.

4. Vacuum with the right speed

Try not to vacuum too quickly. The slower you clean, the more dirt and dust you collect from your carpet.

DIY Machines

You can rent equipment and tools from rental companies. Some of the equipment you can rent include a steam cleaner, industrial vacuum, carpet shampooer, and much more. Compared to standard cleaning equipment, these are stronger and bigger, which increases efficiency.

Different models have varying prices between $60 to $300 or more. The stronger and pricier equipment will cost more, and the rental companies will charge you a half-day rate. Whichever product you rent, avoid damaging your carpets and ensure the equipment will work well.

Clean Pet Accidents

If you have pets in your office, it is best to use organic products to clean the area. You can choose organic cleaners if you're looking for non-toxic products. Use the same dabbing technique with paper towels described above to remove stains properly.

Deep Clean Regularly

Regularly clean with a steam cleaner to have your carpet look new and give it a thorough clean. Steam cleaning uses a cleaning solution combined with high pressure to penetrate the carpet fibers through water-jet nozzles. The hot water and steam will remove dust, soil, and greasy stains.
